We have years of experience in dealing with biological contaminants, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform on a daily basis.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Fire & Soot Cleanup - We'll Tackle It All

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southern York County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Flash Floods in Southern York County

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO we handle all types of weather related claims. From extreme cold snaps to summer storms SERVPRO handles it all!

The tail-end of the summer may certainly seem like it would be a slow time of year for weather but in reality it's the peak of hurricane season. While Maine does not really face hurricanes head on, we get the aftermath of the storms which usually involves heavy rains which can cause flash flooding.

Although we are mostly covered by woodlands, we do still have many urban areas (cities/towns) that are most susceptible to Flash Flooding. The impervious surfaces in the urban areas do not allow water to infiltrate the ground, and the water runs off to the low spots very quickly.

Flash flooding occurs so quickly that people are caught off-guard. Their situation may become dangerous if they encounter high, fast-moving water while traveling. If people are at their homes or businesses, the water may rise quickly lead to basement or home flooding.

Flash flooding happens fast but ends just as quickly. If you find yourself with some damage caused by water please do not hesitate to give a call for a free estimate on repairs and dry-out.

Ready for Extreme Weather!

8/3/2022 (Permalink)

With all the hot and humid days this summer, SERVPRO is prepared to handle any damages due to extreme weather conditions. During the weekend of August 4th, thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued throughout many areas. The following are some different types of extreme weather to look out for during the summer months.

Microbursts – a small concentrated downburst that produces an outward burst of strong winds at the surface. They are short-lived, only lasting about 5 to 10 minutes. Can be wet or dry, although wet microbursts are more common in our region. Dry microbursts are more often seen in the west and in dryer areas.

Lightning – can occur everywhere in the U.S. with the threat of fires and possible severe damage to your home or surrounding structures. Unless you see signs of fire – stay inside! Your home will protect you.

Hail – pellets that usually range between .2 inches and 1.75 inches in size. Hail damage is not always visible, but some things you can look out for are cracks or dents in shingles, bent roof vents and pipes, and damage to siding. If you suspect hail damage, get an expert opinion!

If you experience any storm related damage or water damage, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Southern York County at 207-324-4400.

Flooded Basement? No Problem for SERVPRO!

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

If flood water is not handled quickly and properly, it can jeopardize your health and safety, and cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.

The bottom line: a flooded basement can jeopardize your health, safety, and your home’s integrity. 6/14/2022 (Permalink)

Throughout the year, SERVPRO gets calls about fire damages and puff backs. Puff backs are not as extensive as a house fire but can be just as costly. A puff-back is an explosion that happens inside the burner chamber of the furnace or boiler which causes black smoke to slowly be continuously dispersed through the home. The smoke slowly happens over time and clean a black residue over everything in the home.

Most of the time they are caught relatively quickly, but this can be overlooked if the problem originates in an area of the home not frequently used. Since the issue happens slowly over time and can go unnoticed and cause a great deal of damage. Call Us For Help with Your Storm Damage!

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

Here in Maine we're blessed with miles upon miles of beautiful coastline. SERVPRO of Southern York County is lucky enough to service 5 towns along the coast line including York, Wells, Ogunquit, and more!

During the early part of spring while the weather is warming up this time of year is commonly associated with flooding and coastal flooding. During the melting season river water level are elevated and when mixed with heavy rains, or higher than average heat this can accelerate melting and cause flooding.

Most newer homes are up to date along the coast and are built off the ground according to new codes. This allows for most homes to not to worry too much about a 1 or 2 foot storm surge. But older homes or some homes that may not be built off the ground are susceptible. Please be sure to have sand bags ready, and anything on the bottom level be lifted off of the ground if you are aware of some flooding. Most importantly, just be ready. SERVPRO has seen many devastated homes for homeowners who just weren't that worried about it. Better safe than sorry!

If you have questions or have/having experienced any flood related damage please give us a call.

Don't Forget to Check On Your Appliances!

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO responds to hundreds of water damages every year, and during these losses, we see many that have the same thing in common. A cause that is seen often enough to shed light on is appliance malfunctions.

Washing machines, ice makers, and refrigerators are common culprits of water damage. Some happening quickly, and others causing damage over time that is not seen immediately, which is often more dangerous.

With ice makers and refrigerators more often than not the supply line lets go or comes loose. It's a good idea to check your ice maker, make sure it's in working condition, and check the lines to make sure they are tight.

If you are replacing or moving your washer to a new location please check the connection where the water is hooked up, and (this one is important) make sure the drain hose is secure.

Check your appliances that have water running to them to prevent water damages. As much as we are happy to help you it's just as important to us for homeowners to practice helpful prevention.

Learn About SERVPRO's Emergency Ready Plan!

6/3/2022 (Permalink)

For a business owner and a homeowner, a worst-case scenario involving fire or water damage can seem like the unthinkable, until it suddenly become a reality. In the aftermath of a disaster, quick response time from SERVPRO of Southern York County can help minimize property damage.

The SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan (ERP) is a tool used during any disaster event. Owners need to have quick access to a disaster plan that connects them with the appropriate contacts and pertinent information. When building an emergency plan, here are four key things to remember:

  • Identify your facility's greatest threats in order to assess the overall severity of the event.

During this time, take a look at your locations and the surrounding areas and figure out what your greatest threats are. Is your building in a flood zone? Are you subject to freezing temperatures? These are things to keep in mind.

  • Document all vital information and establish clear communication activities.

An ERP contains critical property information that can help speed up response time after a disaster occurs. Consider including any documented prior loss history, identify and label utility shut off locations, and prioritize who your key contacts are.

  • Practice! Practice! Practice!

You should conduct practice sessions to make sure everyone is clear on the procedure if anything happens. Always have clear evacuation routes in your ERP.

  • Keep it updated, and have all necessary information communicated to your insurance company and emergency restoration vendors.

Being proactive in keeping your ERP updated as things change. People will come and go, updates will be made to the facility, utilities can change, etc. Your SERVPRO representative can help you keep your ERP up-to-date so you're always prepared if disaster strikes!

Gymnasium and commercial business ceiling systems

4/7/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Southern York County has had the opportunity to be a part of some large commercial cleaning efforts over the years. Some of which were specifically gymnasium and commercial business ceiling systems. Over the years of operations these areas become covered in dust, debris, and in certain situations mold can be hosted in these areas.

This cleaning process is relatively straight forward but time-consuming. The process uses lifts to allow our crews to work at the level of these sometime 30 ft areas. While up at the level of the ceiling system our crews' vacuum, wash, and teat the entire systems. The time can vary but take up to a few weeks to complete.

This being such a specific job to do, SERVPRO has got a solid system down for completing these types. If you have a ceiling system you would like looked at, or even clean please do not hesitate to give us a call for a free estimate.

Charred wood?

4/7/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Southern York County has got hundreds of calls over the years regarding fire damages. There are many ways to approach fire damage to a home or business. In almost all cases SERVPRO is there to remove the damaged materials and clean the remaining areas. But cleaning these areas is never a walk in the park. In many cases, we need to use a technique known as soda blasting to get the wood back as close to preloss condition as possible.

Soda blasting is a combination of compressed air mixed with essentially baking soda to "blast" the wood in small sections to slowly work away the charred wood areas and leave the unaffected wood intact. This process can take hours or days depending on the size of the loss.

After the soda blasting is completed SERVPRO is then able to do a final cleaning of the home and provide odor sealing to ensure the odor is eliminated.

For more information on soda blasting or fire damage please feel free to call our office anytime.

Sprinkler systems

4/7/2019 (Permalink)

When responding to water damages SERVPRO runs into all sorts of causes. One cause, in particular, isn't really a cause at all but more of a preemptive measure to prevent fire damage. A sprinkler system in homes or businesses is a reason SERVPRO may be paying you a visit.

Initially, this may seem to be a stab at sprinklers, but its quite the contrary. If a fire is started in a certain room in a building this will trigger the sprinklers resulting in a water damaged area.

Though this room is affected by water, it is certainly better than a whole home or business engulfed in flames. Sprinklers cause a small amount of damage to prevent a larger loss from happening. So even though SERVPRO may be on site from a sprinkler malfunction, someone knocking the head by accident, or someone burning popcorn in the breakroom a water damaged room is better than allowing from to consume a building.

Ice Dam

4/1/2019 (Permalink)

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. This then allow the water that would normally drain off the roof to leak under the singles or roof structure and leak down into the home. A great way to avoid this it to keep up with the snow build up on your roof system. A roof rake can help with this or if the roof is flat you can shovel it off.

An ice dam can show up a number of different ways in most cases its a relatively small amount of water that leaks into an area, creating a water stain that grows and eventually creates a larger issue. This could lead to brown staining on the ceiling area, and if not dried properly could possibly lead to mold.

If you have any questions or concerns about ice dams or staining please give SERVPRO of Southern York County a call.

Stay Healthy This Season!

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

For most of us, the winter season is a busy time of year! Between prepping for the Holidays, family dinners, parties, etc. it can be difficult to focus on our health and taking care of ourselves. With shorter days and colder weather, staying motivated to stay healthy can be difficult. Here are some helpful tips to keep you healthy this winter.

Workout at home – Utilizing online resources to find workout videos are a super easy way to still get your daily exercise in without having to deal with the awful winter weather. Whether you prefer relaxing yoga or fast-paced cardio, the possibilities are endless! This is a nice easy way to keep your health goals in check even when you can’t get outside to exercise.

Wash your hands, FREQUENTLY! – Hand washing is crucial in order to maintain your health during the winter season. Although you should wash your hands all the time no matter the season, it is especially important to protect your immune system and protect others around you from spreading germs.

Take your vitamins! – Taking Vitamin D is a good way to help supplement the lack of sunlight we experience during the winter, and also helps absorb Vitamin A (important for your vision and immune system), iron and calcium! Consuming lots of Vitamin C during the winter helps your body to battle cold and flu symptoms as well.

Mold FAQs

MOLD FAQs

What is Mold?

Mold is Fungi that can be found indoors and outdoors. There are hundreds of thousands of fungi that are estimated to exist, but no one knows exactly how many exist. Mold grows best in warm, damp, and humid areas, and it spreads by making spores. Mold can survive harsh conditions that may not necessarily support mold growth once it has already grown.

How can mold effect you?

Mold can cause a wide range of reactions depending on your health, such as stuffy nose, wheezing, red or itchy eyes, or skin, fever, and shortness of breath. Some extreme cases exposure can lead to asthma.

Where is mold found?

Mold can be found just about anywhere, year-round. Mold growth is encouraged by warm humid conditions. Outdoors growth can be found in shady damp areas, or places where plants may be decomposing. Indoors pretty much anywhere were elevated humidity levels i.e. basements, crawlspaces, attics, and showers.

Suspect Mold?

If you feel you may have a mold issue going on please feel free to call us for a free estimate. We work with several local hygienists who can test the air in your home to ensure the air quality is at a safe level. SERVPRO of Southern York County is a 24/7 business so please feel free to call anytime, day or night.

Extreme Heat

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

We often look forward to the warm days of summer (especially after dealing with the freezing cold winters here in New England) but sometimes lose sight of what affects the extreme heat has on our cars, our pets, and especially us!

Extreme heat is generally defined by temperatures 90 degrees or above, accompanied by high humidity levels. During the extremely hot days we are susceptible to heat rash, dehydration, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. Here are some tips and guidelines to keep everyone safe and cool this summer:

Drink plenty of water – this is one of the most important ways to avoid any heat-related illness. Even if you’re not thirsty, keep drinking! Avoid sugary drinks like tea, coffee and soda – these types of drinks often make dehydration worse. Consuming cold drinks and smaller, colder meals (such as salads and fruit) can also help to keep you cool.

Stay safe in the sun – protect your skin with sunscreen and any other forms of protection while outdoors.

Keep an eye on pets and children – remind your children to drink water, and always remember NOT to leave babies or pets in the car during these hot days even with the AC on. Make sure animals have plenty of water and shade if they are going to be outside.

Bicycle Safety

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone loved riding their bike as a kid, right? Many of us are spending time riding our own, or teaching our children how to ride their bikes this summer. Although this can be a fun activity for everyone, it is important to especially teach our children right safety precautions. Here are some tips for a safe ride!

Wear a helmet every time – make sure it fits properly; it is the best and most effective way to prevent head injuries if an accident happens

Teach children rules of the road – so that they can be safe if/when riding on the street and also learn to be aware of their surroundings. Use a horn or bell to alert other riders and pedestrians, learn the correct hand signals to make drivers aware of what they’re doing, and always obey traffic signals and stop signs!

Be seen – make sure your child can be easily seen by dressing them in bright-colored or reflective clothing, and don’t allow them to ride in the dark. Always wear closed-toe shoes, no flip-flops or bare feet, and avoid loose clothing whenever possible.

Have fun and be safe this summer!

A few steps to help in case of some weather related issues.
